The 10 Special Rules from God

Scripture Location:

Exodus 20:1-17

Role:

Moses, the leader who talks to God and shares His rules with the people.

Message:

God gives us rules to help us love Him and each other, keeping our hearts happy and safe.

Story:

A long, long time ago, a man named Moses climbed a big mountain called Mount Sinai to talk to God. The mountain was covered in clouds, and there was thunder and lightning—God was there! God loved His people so much that He wanted to give them 10 special rules to follow. He wrote them on two stone tablets for Moses to share.

Moses came down the mountain with a big smile and showed the people the rules. “These are from God!” he said. “They’ll help us live happily together!” The rules were:

1. Love God most of all.
2. Don’t make other gods or idols.
3. Use God’s name respectfully.
4. Keep the Sabbath day special.
5. Honor your parents.
6. Do not hurt others.
7. Keep your marriage promises.
8. Don’t take what isn’t yours.
9. Tell the truth.
10. Don’t be jealous of others.

The people cheered, “We’ll follow God’s rules!” They knew these rules would help them be kind, loving, and close to God. Moses taught them that God’s rules are like a big hug—they keep us safe and show us how to love.

Scripture Memory Verse:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” – Deuteronomy 6:5

Lesson Details for Kids:

Story Highlights:

– Moses went up Mount Sinai to talk to God.

– God gave Moses 10 special rules on stone tablets.

– The rules help us love God and each other.

– The people were happy to follow God’s rules.

Why It Matters:

God’s rules are like a map for our hearts. They show us how to love God, be kind to others, and make good choices. When we follow them, we feel happy and safe, and we make God smile!

Activities:

1. Make a Rule Heart: Draw a big heart on paper and write or draw one of the 10 rules inside (like a smiley face for “Love God most of all”). Decorate it with stickers or crayons.

2. Rule Relay Game: Set up 10 stations with a picture or object for each rule (like a toy for “Don’t take what isn’t yours”). Kids run to each station, say the rule, and collect a heart sticker.

3. Sing a Song: Create a simple song with the rules, like “Love God, love God, most of all! Don’t take things, don’t take things, that’s not yours!” Sing it together.

Discussion Questions:

1. Which rule do you think is the easiest to follow? Why?

2. Why do you think God wants us to love Him most of all?

3. How can you honor your parents at home?

4. What happens when we don’t tell the truth? How can we fix it?

Extra Fun Fact:

Did you know Mount Sinai, where Moses got the 10 Commandments, is a real mountain you can visit today? It’s in a place called Egypt, and people still climb it to remember God’s special rules!
