The Lord’s Prayer for Kids

Based on Matthew 6:9-13

Scripture:

Jesus said, “This, then, is how you should pray:
‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’” (Matthew 6:9-13, NIV)

Kid-Friendly Version:

Our Father in heaven,

You’re our big God up in the sky.

Hallowed be your name,

Your name is super special and awesome!

Your kingdom come,

Please come and make everything good, God.

Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven,

We want what You want, here and up there.

Give us today our daily bread,

Please give us food and stuff we need today.

And forgive us our debts,

Sorry for when we’re naughty—forgive us, please!

As we also have forgiven our debtors,

We’ll forgive our friends when they’re mean to us.

And lead us not into temptation,

Help us stay away from bad choices.

But deliver us from the evil one,

Keep us safe from the sneaky bad guy!

Ending (optional for kids):

Cause You’re the best, God, forever and ever. Amen!

Why This Works for Kids:

Simple Words:

“Super special” instead of “hallowed,” “naughty” instead of “debts,” and “sneaky bad guy” instead of “evil one” make it relatable.

Positive Tone:

It keeps God as a loving Father they can talk to.

Scripture Tie-In:

The reference to Matthew 6:9-13 lets them know this comes from Jesus, which teachers or parents can explain.

You can encourage them to say it together or even make it a song to help them remember! Let me know if you’d like help with that.
